Halloween Safety Reminder:

Xylitol Is Deadly for Dogs!

Prudence marks her 5th birthday with a generous gift for Rescued Pets Movement

With Halloween approaching, it’s the season for sweet treats and fun. But while stocking up on candy, it’s important to keep the health and safety of your pets in mind, especially when it comes to a hidden danger found in many sugar-free products: xylitol. Even a small amount of xylitol can be extremely toxic, and even deadly, for dogs.

What Is Xylitol?

Xylitol is a sugar substitute commonly used in sugar-free gum, candy, and various other products because it has fewer calories and is safer for human consumption than sugar. However, this sweetener has the opposite effect on dogs. While humans process xylitol easily, dogs’ bodies react by releasing a large amount of insulin, which can lead to life-threatening hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), liver failure, or worse.

Products That May Contain Xylitol

Xylitol is often found in sugar-free products, including but not limited to:

  • Sugar-free gum and candy – A common culprit for accidental poisoning, especially around Halloween!
  • Toothpaste and mouthwash – Dogs love to sniff around your bathroom, so keep your dental hygiene products out of their reach.
  • Peanut butter – Some brands now use xylitol as a sugar substitute. Always check the label before sharing peanut butter with your pup.
  • Sugar-free breath mints – These tiny treats can pack a dangerous punch.
  • Fruit drinks and flavored waters – Keep your drinks out of paws’ reach, as even beverages could pose a risk.
  • Jellies and jams – Check the labels on spreads before sharing with your dog.

Symptoms of Xylitol Poisoning in Dogs

If your dog accidentally consumes something with xylitol, they may show symptoms within 15-30 minutes. Symptoms to watch out for include:

  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of coordination
  • Seizures
  • Tremors
  • Loss of consciousness

If your dog shows any of these signs, you should seek veterinary help immediately. Xylitol poisoning can be deadly, and rapid treatment is critical to your dog’s chances of survival.

Prevention Tips: Keep Your Dog Safe

While we all love to indulge during Halloween, make sure your furry family members stay safe by following these precautions:

  • Keep all candy and gum out of reach – Avoid leaving purses, bags, or bowls of candy on the floor or low surfaces where your dog could easily reach them.
  • Check labels carefully – Before sharing any human food, such as peanut butter or spreads, make sure to check for xylitol in the ingredients.
  • Educate your family and friends – Make sure everyone in your home is aware of the dangers xylitol poses to pets, especially during the holiday season when candy is abundant.

What to Do in Case of an Emergency

If you suspect that your dog has ingested xylitol, it’s important to act fast. Call your veterinarian or an emergency animal clinic immediately. You can also contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 for guidance.

Let’s make this Halloween fun and safe for everyone, including your four-legged friends. Stay vigilant, and keep those treats out of paws’ reach!

Why I Foster…

We started fostering after our personal pets all passed as we hope to travel extensively. Fostering fills the void when we are home and our goal is to fill them with love before their journey. It’s always hard to let go but the posts from other fosters make you know that you are not alone. Plus, there’s always another to help. RPM has made such a difference for Houston area animals. I always feel supported and heard.”
